The Jonestown story continues to find resonance for a number of musicians who offer artistic interpretations of the events through their own individual visions. A pair of new groups emerged in 2024.
• A thrash/metal/punk band known as The Alex Jonestown Massacre – not to be confused with the Brian Jonestown Massacre – released a self-titled album in August 2024. As one reviewer described them in RVA Magazine, “I do not know if I have met a band with a name that explains so much about them. They are an undeniably and self-proclaimed political band, full of passion and anger, but in the exact same breath, lively and funny, ready to turn to a joke on a dime, and lastly, well read and thorough music lovers.” The album is available on Spotify.
• With a more direct reference to the tragedy of November 1978, another heavy metal group, Veil of the Serpent, released the song “Death Cult” in June 2024, which the group says was “[i]nspired by the horrific happenings in Jonestown.” A review of the song – including a Youtube video of the song itself – appears on the Brave Words website.
