On December 20, 1978, [name deleted], Office of Enforcement and Management, Department of the Interior, telephone 343-8357, was advised of the contents of referenced San Francisco teletype.

On December 20, 1978, [name and title deleted] to Cecil Andrus, Department of the Interior, was advised of the contents of referenced San Francisco teletype and said she would determine if Andrus or Robert H. Mendelsohn has had any contact with the People’s Temple (PT).

PAGE TWO DE WF 0022 UNCLAS

Later on December 20, 1978, [name deleted] said that she had discussed the matter with Andrus and Mendelsohn, and Andrus has never, to his knowledge, had any contact with the PT. Mendelsohn ran for the California State Senate in 1976. Initially it was his understanding that the PT was supporting him, but he later found out that PT was actually supporting his opponent. The only direct contact he had with the PT was in the spring of 1976, when he appeared at the PT in San Francisco along with the San Francisco Chief of Police. Mendelsohn is currently not in WDC, and has returned to San Francisco for the holidays.

In the event the San Francisco Division feels interview of Mendelsohn would be productive and the San Francisco Division is not aware of the San Francisco address of Mendelsohn, Washington Field can obtain his location from the Department of the Interior.
