RYMUR

For information Legat, Caracas, a representative of the Civil Division of the Department recently returned from Georgetown, Guyana, where he located numerous U.S. Treasury checks in the possession of Assistant Commissioner Cecil R. Roberts, Police of Guyana. These Treasury checks were apparently unknown to the U.S. Embassy. Legat promptly obtain from Guyanese authorities a complete inventory of all items in their possession which relate to RYMUR.

Legat is further requested to identify what has happened to all mail addressed to Peoples Temple on or after November 18, 1978.

It is also reported that seven survivors of the Peoples Temple remain at Lamaha Gardens in Georgetown. Legat determine if the activities of these individuals are monitored by local authorities and identify their current sources of income. For information Legat, there is a possibility that checks drawn on the U.S. Treasury continue to be sent to now-deceased former residents of Jonestown. It is desired that a determination be made as to whether these checks are being cashed in a fraudulent manner. The Civil Division of the Department has notified US Treasury Department regarding those individuals known to be dead.
