Re Detroit telephone call to Bureau supervisor, [name deleted], March 15, 1979.
On March 14, 1979, Lieutenant [name deleted], Voice Identification Unit, Michigan State Police, East Lansing, Michigan, telephonically advised that the “National Inquirer” requested him to compare a tape recording containing statements reportedly made by Jim Jones immediately before the mass suicide in November 1978, in Jonestown, Guyana, with a known sample of Jones’ voice in order to determine if the “National Inquirer” tape was authentic. Lieutenant [name deleted] added that the information contained on this tape was apparently used on the “Today”

TV program which was aired on NBC on March 14, 1979, and he subsequently was advised by the “National Inquirer” that since the same information was already released on the “Today” program the “National Inquirer” is no longer interested in determining if the tape is authentic.
Lieutenant [name deleted] advised that he was concerned as to whether or not the tape had any evidentiary value.
On March 15, 1979, following telephone conversation with Bureau supervisor, [name deleted], Lieutenant [name deleted] was advised that the tape furnished by the “National Inquirer” was of no evidentiary value to the FBI.
