Serial 2291

United States Department of Justice
Federal Bureau of Investigation
Memorandum

Date: 4/6/79

To: Mr. Moore
From: W.D. Gow

Subject: RYMUR

PURPOSE: To request that the Technical Services Division, Radio Engineering Section, prepare a duplicate tape of the 43-minute recording of the final hour at Jonestown.

RECOMMENDATION: That the Technical Services Division, Radio Engineering Section, make one copy of the 43-minute recording of the final hour at Jonestown, commonly referred to as the “Death Tape” and furnish same to Criminal Investigative Division (CID), Personal Crimes Unit, who will furnish the tape to the House International Relations Committee (HIRC).

DETAILS: On 3/29/79 a meeting was held in the office of Robert Keuch, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Criminal Division, at the request of representatives of the HIRC. At that meeting the Committee requested ten separate items in the possession of the FBI be turned over to the Committee. After consulting with representatives of FBIHQ and US Attorney William Hunter, San Francisco, it was agreed that three items would be made available to the Committee, one of which was a copy of the above-mentioned “Death Tape.” The “Death Tape” will be made available as soon as possible directly from FBI HQ, CID, Personal Crimes Unit, to the Committee. This will necessitate that a copy of the tape in the possession of the Technical Services Division, Radio Engineering Section be made.

For full details regarding the above meeting see Gow to Moore memorandum 4/4/79, captioned, “RYMUR.”
