SUBJECT: TRIAL OF US CITIZEN LAWRENCE LAYTON

1. After two and one half hours of deliberation, the jury in the trial of US citizen Lawrence Layton for attempted murder brought in a verdict of not guilty on all four counts of the indictment. The jury had voted 10-2 to acquit on each of the four counts against Layton.

2. Following the verdict, prosecuting attorney V. Persaud informed Emboff [Embassy officer] that Layton would remain in custody until the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) decided whether or not to proceed against Layton with charges of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
