[Letter on letterhead of Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, US House of Representatives]

June 20, 1980

Honorable William H. Webster
Director
Federal Bureau of Investigation
J. Edgar Hoover Building
Washington, DC 20535

Dear Mr. Webster:

The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence is investigating allegations that the Central Intelligence Agency was involved with Jim Jones, the Peoples Temple, and the tragic events in Jonestown, Guyana, on November 18, 1978.

Hundreds of thousands of pages of People’s Temple documents and thousands of hours of tapes by Jim Jones and his associates were removed from Jonestown following the mass suicide and are now in the possession of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

While the Committee may be interested in reviewing much of this documentation, at this point in our inquiry, we are confirming ourselves to one tape in particular. The Committee is interested in hearing the November 18, 1978 voice-enhanced suicide tape of Jim Jones and securing the transcript of that tape.

I have asked [name deleted] of the Committee staff to contact your Congressional Liaison office on this matter. If there are any questions, Miss [name deleted] may be reached out [number deleted].

Thanking you for your attention in this matter and with every good wish, I am

Sincerely yours,
/s/ Edward P. Boland
Chairman
