Trial for Laurence John Layton has been set for May 12, 1981. Government requested trial date in February, while defense requested a September date. Date set by judge, will start jury selection on May 12, 1981, with testimony starting in late May. Guyana witnesses would probably be requested to testify early June 1981. Guyana witnesses determined by prosecution to be necessary in SF trial would be:

1. Skip Roberts, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Georgetown, Guyana; 2. Detective Inspector Jagmahon, Alberttown Police Department; 3. Mortimer Kansin Ally, Constable, Port Kaituma, Northwest Territory; 4. Joel Clementson, Port Kaituma, Northwest District; 5. Leslie Mootoo, MD, Georgetown Hospital, Georgetown, Guyana.

It is also probable that Inspector Jagmahon, Detective Superintendent Smith and Constable Kansin Ally would be required to appear April 1, 1981 for hearing on defense motions to suppress evidence and confessions. Prosecution is aware that this may cause an additional trip and hardship on some Guyanese witnesses, however if deemed necessary, failure of Guyana witnesses to appear at hearing of April 1, 1981 would be disastrous to US prosecution.

American Embassy, Georgetown, Guyana, is requested to notify Director of Public Prosecution of witness desires of the United States Attorney, San Francisco, as well as scheduled dates.
