Robert F. Peckham, Chief Judge, US District Court, filed order on March 2, 1981, clerk’s office in the United States Court, for the Northern District of California, in the matter of the United States of America v. Lawrence [Laurence] John Layton, Criminal Number 80-416, as follows:

“It is hereby ordered that the United States of America, through the Department of State, the Department of Justice, and the United States Attorney for the Northern District of California take any and all steps necessary to obtain from Guyana the weapons and slugs allegedly fired therefrom, as well as any other items of evidence related to the shooting of Congressman

Leo J. Ryan, and the Chief of Mission Richard Dwyer, and others at the airstrip Port Kaituma, Guyana, on November 18, 1970, dated March 2, 1981.”

Order is signed by Judge Peckham in response to defense motion that the prosecution make every effort to immediately identify and make available to the defense all physical evidence in this case. Defense has requested to personally examine gun and bullets, currently in the possession of Guyana.

American Embassy, Georgetown, is requested to advise Director of Public Prosecution E. A. Ramao of judge’s order and to respectfully request that items of evidence, the Layton revolver and all bullets maintained by the court or the Guyana police be furnished to Embassy official and forwarded to the FBI. On receipt of revolver and bullet, Embassy is requested to pouch, dispatch, or transport evidence to FBI Headquarters, Washington, DC, attention [name deleted], FBI Laboratory, as expeditiously as possible.

Information company furnished San Juan in the event assistance is requested.
