For information Bureau, captioned matter United States vs. Laurence John Layton, US District Court, Northern District of California, Criminal Number 80-0416, RFP, commenced jury selection on July 21, 1981. Jury selection should be concluded prior to August 14, 1981.

On August 14, 1981, judge will hear motion to suppress “signed confession”. Guyanese police witnesses have been requested to appear at this hearing and arrangements currently being made through State Department.

Trial scheduled to commence testimony August 17, 1981. Trial expected to last two months.

To date, prosecution witness list contains only one FBI agent,

San Francisco has been in telephonic contact with [name deleted], whose desired testimony will include the identification of 38 caliber weapon taken from subject and ballistics comparison of projectile removed from victim Monica Bagby. [name deleted] will be requested to appear latter part of August, 1981. Bureau will be advised of specific date as soon as possible. Other Bureau agents may be requested to appear to show custody of evidence, however AUSA currently negotiating with Federal Public Defender’s office to stipulate custody.

Bureau will be advised of pertinent developments.
