For information of the Bureau, retrial of subject Larry Layton has been scheduled in the Northern District of California, San Francisco, California, for September 4, 1984. New prosecuting team from San Francisco will conduct the retrial. Prosecuting team will include Assistant United States Attorney Dennis Michael Nerney and United States Attorney Joseph Russoniello. United States Attorney Joseph Russoniello has directed Dennis Michael Nerney to travel to Guiana [Guyana]. United States Attorney Joseph Russoniello has specifically requested that Special Agent Donald R. Hale accompany AUSA Nerney to Guiana. Travel to Guiana is scheduled for the week of April 16 through 20, 1984.

Purpose of visit will be to recontact Guianese witness in Georgetown and Port Kaituma for a pretrial interview. United States Attorney’s office would like to liaison with Deputy Public Prosecutors office and police commissioner’s office. Prosecuting team desires at least one of the prosecutors to have actual visit to crime scene and Jonestown community. Additional evidence requested for retrial will include exact measurements of Kaituma airfield and specific distances within the community of Jonestown. United States Attorney’s office also desires photographs of holding station at Port Kaituma.

United States Attorney’s [office] requires case agent SA Donald R. Hale present during pretrial interview, liaison contacts as well as necessity for taking measurements at Port Kaituma and Jonestown including photography.

For information of the Bureau case agent Donald R. Hale has traveled to Guiana on five previous occasions and is familiar with the Government of Guiana, embassy officials, and regulations, and has traveled to Jonestown community.

Bureau authorization is requested for travel of SA Donald R. Hale.
