1. Embassy has just received the following letter from [U]SG in response to ambassador’s letter attempting to facilitate People’s Temple Receiver Fabian’s work with GOG.

2. “Dear Ambassador,

I do regret the pressure of work made me postpone for so long this reply to your thoughtful letter of February 5, 1980 concerning the lawsuits involving the People’s Temple of the Disciples of Christ Church in Guyana. Your clarification of the position of the United States Government with respect to those lawsuits was noted with understanding.

The lawsuits are fraught with legal complexities of many kinds but your [you] are no doubt aware the negotiations for a possible stellement [settlement] are in train and induce some optimism that the end of litigation may be in sight. Your kind offer of the use of your good offices in bringing about an amicable solution is appreciated and will be borne in mind should the need for your assis-

Please be assured that the objective of forever putting to rest all outstanding issues relating to the People’s Temple of the Disciples of Christ Church in Guyana is shared by the Government of Guyana equally with your government.
