FM AMEMBASSY GEORGETOWN
TO SECSTATE WASHDC PRIORITY 2973
UNCLAS GEORGETOWN 3243
E.O. 12065: N/A
TAGS: CDES, GY (PEOPLE’S TEMPLE)
SUBJECT: PEOPLE’S TEMPLE CHECKS
REF: A) STATE 170129; B) GEORGETOWN 2102

1. Embassy does not possess any checks from Total Insurance and Trust Company payable to Ronald W. Grimm.

2. Request guidance, per Ref B, on subject of non-US Treasury checks in our possession.

3. Sir Lionel Luckhoo tells us that the People’s Temple Receiver in San Francisco has instructed him to have nothing to do with the crates being held in Guyanese Customs. The Receiver thinks they should be disposed of by gift or sale as the Embassy sees fit. Luckhoo said that in view of these instructions, he was not going to touch the crates, especially since substantial storage charges were probably due.

4. We suggest that the Department might wish to confirm this position with the Receiver (Mr. Fabian). We would appreciate receiving instructions as to whether the Department wishes the Embassy to take any action with respect to the crates.
