9 AM – D.D. Macon, Joyce Parks, Phyllis Bloom [Chaikin] – They wrote up Ruth Lowery because her attitude is bad. She’s feeling sorry for herself. Won’t work under supervision.

Decision: She’ll work in rice tent for a while. Admits being manipulative. [Handwritten annotation: “Needs better job for self-image.”]

10 AM – Ameal Staten was reported as being a hypercondriac. Resents standing up in line at 74 yrs. old. while young people sit down. She was reassured that it wasn’t Dad’s doing.

Decision: Ameal will write her problems to Ava Jones in the future.

10:45 AM – Edith Roller – written up because she can’t get along with cottage. She admits it is true. Inez Wagner (roommate) brings her complaints to Edith and dumps it on her to write up for her.

Decision: Inez will write up her complaints. She is going to lock up her things. Will look into a new place for her to move (medical reasons). Has trouble walking long distances where she lives now, it’s hard on varicosities [varicose veins].

11:15 AM – Ruth and Mary Lenin [Tupper] were reported for staying over their mom’s house at night. They said they didn’t anymore. Explained to them it wasn’t healthy for their growth and their mom’s. It could be used by others to stay with blood ties.

Said she had no pressing problems. But when she talk to Dad,  the people around him said it was alright. She likes Jonestown.

Decision: She’ll stay in teaching  [handwritten addition: “until Sept.”], will let counselors know if she changes her mind. All counselors felt that Dorothy does have problems that are bothering her. Ruby Caroll [Carroll] thought it might be her children that are back in the states.

3 PM – Ellen Klingman was told to reinforce strong, good ideas about Dad and Jonestown and her children.

CAOS

I told Ava as long as people are not taken off the job – they can counsel them during the day.

For your knowledge, the type of counseling that was scheduled during working hours as follows:

  1. The Medical People, the majority of their counseling was during their meeting hours 2-4 PM or their breaks. Each day they have some type of meeting 2-4, we tried to schedule it then or whenever Phyllis requested depending on who’s involved, i.e. Larry [Schacht] and other workers were scheduled in the AM because Larry’s not working then.

Bond People were scheduled in the afternoons since Annie [Moore] & Terry [Carter Jones] works at night. Bennie would still be on duty and I know it would be lefted on the bond door where to find her.

  1. Psychological Cases i.e. Orodie [Orde] Dennis, Tom Partak, Michaleen [Michaeleen Brady], Barbara Walter etc. would be scheduled in the afternoons. These people were not working anyway and were causing problems on the job. Also it takes 1-2 hours to get them to agree or understand something. Of course, their supervisors Fannie & Connie had to miss working hours to explain their cases. However, they were missing work time trying to confront them daily on the job.
  2. High School Students scheduled during their own project time 1-3 PM.
  3. Emergency Situations i.e. almost a fight in the fields, Herbal Kitchen, etc.
  4. Kitchen People during their break time or if they’re involved in a real mess that affects entire community.
  5. Warehouse People during closed hours to the public
  6. School Teachers (Nursery up to Adult and Students) during their naptime, 1-2 pm, 1-3 pm, or after school 4 PM or break time

I know there has been a couple of cases that were scheduled during working hours, I agree that was a mistake.

Thurs. Regular counseling night, we have 4 teams, 15-20 people on each team, been divided up in the Rice Tent or Library. We have at least 5-6 cases of these which totals 20-25 cases.

Mon.  Steering we have scheduled on Mon which takes the best counselors to away.

Tues – Sat. P. Rally,

Wed. – We schedule every other week

Fri.  Classes.

We have had counseling but people hate to give up Sundays. There’s no reasonable way that some of these cases can be intensely handled with time and patience that is required on a Thursday Night, in a crowded rice tent, with some regular counselors. Also it’s too hard to handle 20 regular cases along with real problems that takes 1-2 hours at night. I think our problems will be half-ass dealt with, and more frequently than we already do.

The people use for intense counseling during the day: Kay, Jack or/and Dee,  Laura Johnston, Ruby & Rhonda on occasin.

I’m not that stupid that I would schedule petty shit during the day working hours. Most credit counseling is at night and I do but really don’t enjoy or like to be, involved in counseling day and night just for the hell of it.

I will comply with your decision and re-arrange counseling as you see fit.

I’m not upset, but did have this on my mind and should direct it to the proper people.
