Dear Gene:
Today I received your letter of November 27, which was mailed in San Francisco on the 6th of December. I hope by now that you have received my letter and are aware of the fact that we are selling the savings and loan. This transaction creates some personal problems for me in an area in which you have a high degree of expertise (I am sure you understand). I really need your advice and counsel, and am wondering when it would be possible for you to come up here to help me. I doubt if a lot of your time would be required.
We can resolve the whole business with WHFC at that time also. Hank is gone for a couple of days; as soon as he gets back I will have him comply with your request re Wickes and the money. I want to do what I can to be helpful to you.
The fellow from San Francisco called the other day, and I am disappointed that you have been unable to work out the phone patch, I am looking forward to seeing you. My love to you, Phyllis, and the children, and hope you have a good Christmas and New Year’s.
Ray [Chaikin, Eugene’s brother.]

Dear Gene: I was greatly relieved to receive your letter of November 12, which I got yesterday. I understood that you were going to Jonestown last September, and Frieda had told me that, at the time of my surgery, she wrote six letters to you c/o P. Adams. When there was no response to all that correspondence, I assumed that you had (1) not gone back to Jonestown, or (2) for some reason were not receiving your mail very promptly (your letter took over two weeks).
On the 20th of September I had a lumbar laminectomy. I had been in the hospital for two weeks prior to that and my condition deteriorated to the point where I could not walk. I had no alternative but surgery. I have been recovering very slowly and still have a way to go. We are in the process of selling the savings and loan, and, hopefully, the transaction will close around the middle of next year. What are your plans for coming to California– I really need your advice on some personal matters.
The kids and Carol are all fine, as is Frieda. Pete Greenfield’s Mother passed away last week. It was nice of Gail to write to the kids. I got a letter today from Arnold Hellin and he asked about you.
Write again.
Love,
Ray

Gene: The end of January I have to go to Miami on business, and the first week in February I plan on going to the Caribbean, probably Saint Martin.
As it is very important for us to get together, I hope you will be able to fly over and meet me. I will send you the exact information later. Also, please send me the name and phone number of the man who handles the radio patch, in case I need to confirm the arrangements with you at the last moment, if you think it should be handled that way.
Happy birthday–how does it feel to be 45?
My love to Phyllis and the kids.
Love,
Ray

These are copies of all the letters that Gene wrote to various people. All have been mailed or delivered except for the one to his mother which I didn’t like so you guys can either clear it as is and tell me to mail it or please ask Gene to rewrite it as I thought there was too much emphasis on faulty mail service and maybe I read some implied things in there that weren’t there but it needs another clearing before getting mailed. All others have been dispatched

Dear Ray,
I’ll try to radio you in the next few days, but in the meantime, I thought to get you an “up to date” since most of this I would not be able to discuss over the air in any event. First, I would like to invite you and Mom, with Carol and your kids if you like, to come down for a visit during November or December. I would like to see you, badly, and him as well and she can’t make the trip unless someone goes with her. I know it will be somewhat of a drag, but…..I don’t know if I will have any other opportunity to see her again.
We were doing good work until the inevitable smear came, with maybe much worse to come. It is expected that groups of our type are infiltrated by Agency people, and we always expected that we had a few but we never identified them, nor did we think that they were high up. Just 2 few days ago, we got a real break. Donald Freed, author of “Executive Action” and Mark Lane (who will be here tomorrow) agreed to help us and in fact, did succeed in obtaining the cooperation of one of the conspiracy working against us – a Sleaze of an ex-con investigator by the name of Mazor. He has done a lot of talking – all on consensual tape, and Freed/Lane intend to break the story soon.
The fact is that we have merited considerable agency attention and have had at least four agents with us over the years. The principle one appears to be one Timothy O. Stoen, who in fact was on the C.I.A. payroll during the middle and late 1960’s. We now believe that he has been a witting agent for the C.I.A. since 1958. He worked in East Germany, the College movement, on the Panthers in the Bay Area; then was switched to us in 1969 when Jim drew attention in the northern California area, which was Stoen’s area, as well. ‘Nuff said? Additionally, Stoen has intimate connections with INTERFOL and we speculate with several private right-wing organizations as well. He is a “pig” par excellence. We have confirmed Mazor’s story, in part, by some belated research in the newspapers which document his role in East Germany; found some of his old notes that support the same thesis, and we do know that he did some legal work for the Panthers but joined our ranks before he got too far into it. Obviously, there is no possibility of my returning to the U.S.
Freed, who lives in Los Angeles, has been here last week, Mazor has just left after enlightening us on such heart-warming projects as how they were planning to come in here with an “A Tear” and hit us with rockets and mortars, and how the whole anti-publicity smear was developed.
Mark Lane, as I said, is coming tomorrow. On the whole, our position has improved immensely, and we have garnered quite a bit of ammunition to fight back with. In addition, our position here is very good. The Guyanese Government is totally supportive of us. Last week, when the conspiracy sent an agent in on us, the Government threw her [probably Kathy Hunter] out and confiscated all of her film and cameras. We are also making some very good friends among the progressive nations of the world. So…, there is now a great deal of security in our position here. Stoen has not moved in several areas because to do so, he would have to drop his “cover.” When we do so for him, and expose a number of agents, we must expect some action of a retaliatory nature, so the situation is not without concern.
At this point, however, the area of tension is the office of the Los Angeles District Attorney. Stoen, et al.m are pushing him to file theft charges against three of our people, including Jim MacElvane, who you have met, by contriving an issues of duress in

the donation of the proceeds of sale, through escrow, of two pieces of property. The thing was entirely consensual, but they have a series of witnesses who wittingly assist Stoen, so the position is difficult. If there is any way that Van de Kamp can be approached by an acquaintance for whom he has some respect; who could inform him of these facts so he would hold off from filing till all of the elements of the conspiracy are unraveled and publicized (including the likelihood of Stoen himself being indicted for certain crimes), they would be doing him and us a great service. We do not need the expense or bad publicity that the case would bring and he does not need to be characterized as a witting agent of the C.I.A. when the story breaks; not that we would do it, we wouldn’t – but if he has filed on us, it will look that way. Besides, from what we know of him, we do not believe that he would wish to participate in a neo-nazi plot to destroy an interracial group. I do not know whether there is any possibility that Dick could be persuaded to do such a thing, out if you feel that there is any chance, would you try? Whatever Dick’s politics, he is not a racist, and I am sure that this scenario would not go down well with him. Perhaps you might know someone else. If you can use any evidence, we will be able to get you a newspaper file on the conspiracy including Mazor’s role, Mazor’s criminal record and a copy of his tape. You might also care to speak to Don Freed; he met me here and will know me – but please speak to him in person.
If you wish more details or have a hard time locating Freed, call the San Francisco Temple. Teri Buford should be there and she will get what you want. If she is out of town, there will be someone assigned there to take her calls. Identify yourself. Though the things I am telling you here are not really “secret”, yet we need some working time before being totally hassled in order to organize our campaign so we are not being too open about it. Anyway, if you feel that there is anything that needs to be communicated that you cannot allow to be public, I suggest you do it in person, direct….but I see no real reason for any such thing.
One last point in the remote chance that it may affect you. For years, people have been saying that they were getting threatening phone calls from us, and have been quite hysterical about it. We didn’t make them, and until very recently, believed that the Folks were lying to stir up trouble. All of them had in common that they were attacking us when the calls came; usually in the media. Now, we are not so sure. We believe that this stuff was done by our own “insiders” who knew just do because they were privy to both sides of all of these events, in order to “egg” the opposition on. I doubt that anyone would think to involve you, but be circumspect, and if something should happen, do not be confused. the last batch of calls went to Van de Kamp.
My love to your companion and the children. I am writing separately to Mom, but say I wrote to you. Of course, none of this to her. Thanks for anything you can do. I hope to see you later on in the year.
Love,
Eugene
P.S. Since I assume you might have been contacted by a member of the “Concerned Relatives,” I would appreciate knowing the content of the communication – I don’t believe that you called Dymally, exclusively, on your own initiative, though I know your intention was the best.
PP.S. I thought you would like to know that Phyllis and I are no longer together. I’ve got a new companion, Inez Wagner, who is really a lovely person. I’m looking forward to you to meet her. The kids think it’s fine.

Dear Joe;
Just a note of thanks. Your information and concern are making a world of difference for us. Jim is feeling so much better now. He is back to his old, alert, dynamic self for which we are all very much relieved. It was hard to see a guy who has always been so bright and vital dulled by his hypertension medication. Now, with all you are doing, he, and we as well, also the light of day approaching and it sure is reflected in his health. It has been a while since I’ve seen him so sharp – back to his normal self. I guess you know he has a fantastic memory and an almost unbelievable ability to synthesize data.
Well, I’m just saying thanks for everything, including the health of my very dear friend.
Eugene

Dear Charles;
It was really great to see you down here. You can’t imagine how much we look forward to these trips of yours. It was especially good for Jim. His health is a much improved from the hope that you brought and carry with you.
Jim is the brightest person I’ve ever met. His IQ, ability to recall, and grasp and organization of detail are amazing. I guess you may not know, but while you were here he was suffering from the most severe sort of hypertension and the medication he was taking to control it made him appear to be far less than his normal level of alertness. However, the events that took place during your trip have greatly reduced the hypertension which now appears to be normalized and the medication has been discontinued. He is really back to his old self, and his recall and acuity are superb.
I am sure that he will take to heart your advice about getting a thorough work-up, especially now that the legal problem here has been alleviated. I can’t tell you how much all of us appreciate your help, please accept my special thanks.
Gene
P.S. If it weren’t for your encouragement we would not have had Don Fried [Freed] and Mark Lane down here, nor would we now have their invaluable assistance. Thanks to you our horizons and support are considerably expanded.
You know, Jim has always said that some of us are too quick to suspect [to] see evidence of diabolical design in every event but you’re coming here and showing us the true shape of events has done much to alleviate those concerns.

Dear Mom,
I guess my last letter just didn’t get through. Don’t know what the problem is but seeing as it exists I’ll make a point to write more often. Firstly, all of us here are fine. Things are looking up for us in a number of particulars. David is now working with me and I am landscaping the whole area. It is a really gratifying job and one that an endless amount of creativity can be exercised, David is a really good little gardener and a very hard worker. He is doing quite well in a role where he has not only to contend with a father, but also a supervisor in the same person. Gail is fine and busy as usual. Phyllis is, as always, caught up in medical administration.
Our guest facilities are nearing completion and it is quite likely that I will be able to invite you all by this fall. It is my hope that you will be able to come then, and Ray too if business permits. (Pardon the lousy typing, I am going too fast.) Actually the place is growing quite rapidly – so that there is always a tight fit to get everyone in reasonable, comfortable quarters but somehow we always manage.
I am quite interested in your impending trip to China. It will surely be most interesting for you. I do hope that there will not be any hitches. At this point I have some real question as to “where their heads are at” but the social system is organized to a very high degree and the impact of that sort of social system on the mental health of the country should be readily visible by now.
Things are a lot lighter here for us than you recall in the U.S. If you can believe it I have the time to do some studying! I have started with Russian literature, first Tolstoy, next Turgenev. We have quite a substantial library for a “small outpost” in the bush. It is currently over 20,000 volumes, so there is much to choose from.
It has been quite rainy here lately which has put something of a quietus on the agriculture. Here, I guess as all over the world in agriculture there are times when you work like hell and times when you wait on the weather. Nonetheless one of our teams of 15 persons and a tractor managed to plant out almost 2,000 banana trees in four days last week. Considering that the average annual production for one plant is up around 30 pounds that is a lot of food. The citrus is also starting to produce well now. Some of the trees are quite large. It gives a real sense of fulfillment since it was I who planted them. Nice to see things grow.
I wonder if all of our mail is not getting through. Since your last letter I expected to get letters from several people but have not. This is not a complaint. After all, I have not written. I would merely like to know about it if mails are not reaching here. I got yours dated 21 Aug. today. Anyway, keep well and don’t overdo it. I hope that you do get to China and have a most rewarding experience. Do say hello to Ray for me and assure him that I am alright. Say hello to Carole and the kids. I hope Ray’s back is not giving him fits still. The best thing that he could do is to take a long vacation. I realize that he can’t do it now, but soon it may be possible. He better before it becomes irreversible – arthritis and so forth in the back.
Love, Gene
P.S. If you do go, drop me a line so I will know how long you will be gone and when you expect to return to California.
P.P.S If you have time before you do I would appreciate it if you could send me a pair of cotton pajamas (small), and a Levis Suit, top small or 34, pants 31 in. waist and 30 in. length.
