Letter to Laura Johnston from her mother
[letterhead for Resources for the Future, Washington, D.C.]

Dearest Laurie,
Here’s a nice letter I got from the Embassy yesterday. Thought you might like to see it. Although I haven’t heard from you since my bug brouha, I’m assuming all is well.
Please use the enclosed for some little goodies or what-ever. You did say you needed a small income to take care of shoes and such, didn’t you? Well, at least send word when you can (and pictures!) What do you think about a camera?
The little toy box is coming, but have to get out to Young Playways for a few special items.
[handwritten] Love you, Mom

Dear Mrs. Reid:
I refer to your recent letters to me concerning your daughter, Laura, who is presently in Guyana with the Peoples Temple Mission.
I thought you would like to know that, even though you had informed me in your last letter that you were satisfied that Laura was well and happy, she had met with our Consul on September 2nd. Our Consul relayed to me that he had a very nice conversation with Laura and he is convinced that she is both happy and enthusiastic about her work with the Peoples Temple. She appeared healthy and is enjoying her stay in Guyana very much.
Your letters will be kept on file in the event that at some time in the future Laura wishes to return home at your expense.
I am happy that I am able to report that all is well with your daughter. Please accept my best wishes.
Sincerely,
John D. Blacken
