Dear Friend,
We have read the “Chile Ad” in the San Francisco Chronicle of Oct. 15, 1973, and we commend you for the principled way in which you exercise the courage of your convictions. This is just a short letter to express to you how much your stand is appreciated by our church. We are heartened for the cause of freedom and democracy that citizens are deciding to make known their sentiments and convictions in this matter. We join you in the hope that steps will be taken to preserve the democratic traditions of Chile.
James W. Jones, the president of our church (which has 10,000 members and is probably the largest Protestant congregation in California), wants to convey to you his kindest regards. We have contributed to this cause and have written our congressmen appropriately. Our work is devoted to the achievement of brotherhood and justice, and it is operating human service programs on many fronts to combat the effects of discrimination, poverty, and racism. We feel that people of good will who love liberty should communicate with and recognize one another, that the light of freedom may burn more brightly. It is in this spirit that we are writing to you, and taking the liberty of enclosing some information about this work and its leader, James W. Jones, who has inspired and directed it with such tireless dedication.
Thank you again for your display of conscience. May our combined efforts for peace and justice quickly bear fruit.
