#1
THE CIVIL RIGHTS NATIONAL ANTHEM

Lift every voice and sing till earth and heaven ring
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicings rise high as the Listening skies
Let it resound loud as the roaring sea.
Sing a song; full of the faith that our dark past has taught us;
Sing a song; full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun; of a new day begun;
Let us march on till victory is won.

#2
LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO ‘ROUND

Love makes the world go ‘round; love makes the world go ‘round and’ round;
Somebody soon will love you just as we love you now.
High in some starlit sky, love sings a silvery song
Making the world twirl softly; love makes the world go ‘round.

#3
OH, FREEDOM!

Oh, freedom; Oh, freedom; Oh, freedom over me.
And before I’ll be a slave and be buried in my grave
I’ll go on with you and be free.

#4
I SHALL NOT BE MOVED

I shall not, I shall not be moved; I shall not, I shall not be moved;
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water; I shall not be moved.

Black and white together; I shall not be moved;
Black and white together; I shall not be moved;
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water; I shall not be moved.

Freedom forever; I shall not be moved;
Freedom forever; I shall not be moved;
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water; I shall not be moved.

Unity forever; we shall not be moved;
Unity forever; we shall not be moved;
Just like a tree that’s planted by the water; we shall not be moved.

#5
JOE HILL

I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night alive as you or me.
Says I to Joe, “You’re ten years dead”;
“I never died;” said he; “I never died,” said he.

“The copper bosses killed you, Joe, they shot you, Joe,” says I;
“Takes more than guns to kill a man, “ Says Joe,
“I didn’t die, “; says Joe, “I didn’t die. “

And standing there as big as life and smiling with his eyes;
Says Joe, ‘‘They can never kill, but on to organize; I went on to organize.”

From San Diego up to Main in every mine and mill
Where working men defend their rights, it’s there you’ll find Joe Hill
It’s there you’ll find Joe Hill.

I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night alive as you or me;
Says I to Joe, ‘‘You’re ten years dead”;
“I never died,” said he; “I never died,” said he.

#6
SIXTEEN TONS

Now some people say a man’s made out of mud,
But a poor man’s made out of muscle and blood,
Muscle and blood, skin and bone,
A mind that’s weak and a back that’s strong.

(Chorus;)
You load sixteen tons and what do you get?
You get another day older and deeper in debt.
Saint Peter, don’t you call me ‘cause I can’t go.
l owe my soul to the company store.

-2-
I was born fine morning when the sun didn’t shine,
I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine
I loaded sixteen tons of number nine coal,
And the straw boss hollered, “Well, bless my soul. “

-3- I was born one morning in the drizzling rain;
Fighting and trouble is my middle name.
I was raised in the bottoms by a momma hound
I’m mean as a dog but I’m gentle as a lamb.

-4-
If you see me coming, you better step aside;
A lot of men didn’t, and a lot of men died.
I got a fist of iron and a fist of steel,
If the right one don’t get you then the left one will.

#7
A NATION IS RISING

A nation is rising rich in the virtues of Americanism rebirthed by God.
Rich in honesty, brotherhood and peace
Where a man is a man and not a color, creed or race.
A people charged with a current of justice
That will change the tide of governmental affairs
A righteous nation under God Almighty is rising
Electrifying the atmosphere!

#8
BROTHERHOOD IS OUR RELIGION
Brotherhood is our religion; For democracy we stand;
We love everybody; We need every hand.
It’s based on the constitution and it certainly is God’s command;
These are the rights we adore: Liberty, Fraternity, Equality for all
These are the rights we stand for!

#9
DEEP RIVER

Deep river; my home is over Jordan;
Deep river; I want to cross over into the promised land.

# 10
NEW BIRTH OF FREEDOM

We have a new birth of freedom; freedom that no man can give.
We have a new birth of freedom; that only love can give.
Abraham Lincoln spoke about it; but love has brought it about;
We have a new birth of freedom; and it’s under democratic love!

#11
BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND

-1-
How many roads must a man walk down before they call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand?
How many times must the cannon balls fly before they’re forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowing’ in the wind;
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.

-2-
How many years must a mountain exist before it is washed to the sea?
How many years can some people exist before they’re allowed to be free? H
ow many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesn’t see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind;
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.

-3-
How many times must a man look up before he can see the sky?
How many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry?
How many deaths will it take till he knows that too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind;
The answer is blowin’ in the wind.

#12
WE SHALL HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS

We shall have the same rights; not only equal but the same;
Side by side we shall ride in the same car, bus or train.
We shall play in the same parks and read our lessons in the very same schools;
There shall be the very same rights for you, and you, and you. (Forever!)
We shall have the same rights; we all shall dine face to face;
Eternally there shall never be not a color, creed, or race;
We shall live together and worship God in the same pew;
There shall be the very same rights for you, and you, and you.

#13
WE SHALL OVERCOME

We shall overcome; we shall overcome; we shall overcome some day.
Deep in my heart I do believe, we shall overcome someday.
We shall all be free; we shall all be free; we shall all be free some day.
Deep in my heart I do believe, we shall all be free some day.
We shall all have peace; we shall all have peace; we shall have peace someday.
Deep in my heart I do believe, we shall all be free some day.
We’ll walk hand in hand; we’ll walk hand in hand; we’ll walk hand in hand someday.
Deep in my heart I do believe, we’ll walk hand in hand someday.
We shall live as one; we shall live as one; we shall live as one someday.
Deep in my heart I do believe, we shall live as one some day.
We are not afraid; we are not afraid; we are not today.
Deep in my heart I do believe; we are not afraid today!

#14
YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE

When you walk through a storm hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid, of the dark
At the end of the storm is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark
Walk on through the wind; walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on; walk on; with hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone; you’ll never walk alone.

#15
BORN FREE

Born free; as free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows; born’ free to follow your heart.
Live free and beauty surrounds you; the world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star.
Stay free; let no walls divide you;
You’re free as the roaring tide so there’s no need to hide.
Born free; and life is worth living
But only worth living if you’re born free.

#16
NO ONE IS AN ISLAND

No one is an island; no one stands alone;
Each ‘one’s joy is joy to me; each one’s grief is my own.
We need one another so I will defend
Each one as my brother; each one as my friend.

#17
GOING TO STUDY WAR NO MORE

Goin’ to lay down my sword and shield, down by too riverside,
Down by the riverside, down by the riverside.
Goin’ to lay down my sword and shield, down by the riverside,
And study war not more.

I ain’t goin’ to study war no more, I ain’t goin’ to study war no more,
I ain’t goin’ to study war no more, I ain’t goin’ to study war no more,
I ain’t goin; to study war no more, I ain’t goin’ to study war no more.

#18
GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Getting to know you; getting to know all about you;
Getting to like you; getting to hope you like me.
Haven’t you noticed suddenly I’m free and easy
Because of all those wonderful and new Things
I’m learning about you day by day.

#19
GIVE ME SOME MEN

Give me some men who are stout-hearted men
Who will fight for the rights they adore.
Start me with ten who are stout-hearted men
And I’ll soon give you ten-thousand more.
Shoulder to shoulder and bolder and bolder
We’ll fight as we press to the fore.
Then there’s nothing in this world can halt or mar our plans,
When stout-hearted men stick together man to man.

#20
GLORY OF LOVE

You’ve got to give a little, take a little, and let your poor heart break a little,
That’s the story of, that’s the glory of love.
You’ve got to laugh a little, cry a little, and let the clouds roll by a little,
That’s the story of, that’s the glory of love.
As long as there’s a few of us, we’ll face the world with all its charms
And when the world gets through with us, we’ve got each other’s arms.
You’ve got to win a little, lose a little, and sometimes have the blues a little;
That’s the story of, that’s the glory of love.

#21
GO DOWN, MOSES

Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land
Tell ole Pharaoh to let my people go.

#22
I BELIEVE

I believe for every drop of rain that falls a flower grows;
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night a candle glows;
I believe for everyone who goes astray someone will come to show the way;
I believe; I believe.

I believe above the storm the smallest prayer will still be heard;
I believe that someone in the great somewhere hears every word;
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry or touch a leaf or see the sky;
Then I know why I believe.

#23
FREE AT LAST

Free at last; Free at last; Thank God Almighty I’m free at Last.

#24
FREEDOM

Freedom; Freedom; Freedom; Freedom; Freedom!

#25
WHEN I STAND FOR TRUTH

When I stand for truth I want you to move;
When I stand for truth I want you to move;
Let the works of my life and my actions day by day
Be acceptable in thy sight, 0 yes.

When I march for peace I want you to move;
When I march for peace I want you to move;
Let the works of my life and my actions day by day
Be acceptable in thy sight, 0 yes.

To help the hungry children I want you to move;
To help the hungry children I want you to move;
Let the works of my Life and my actions day by day
Be acceptable in thy sight, 0 yes.

#26
ACCENTUATE THE POSITIVE
Accentuate the positive; eliminate the negative;
Latch on to the affirmative, and don’t mess with “Mr. In-Between”.
To illustrate my last remark – Jonah in the whale, Noah in the ark
What did they do just when everything seemed so dark – so dark?

#27
A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD

-1-
A mighty fortress is our God, A Bulwark never failing;
Our helper he amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing;
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

-2-
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right man on our side, the man of God’s own choosing;
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is he.
Almighty God is his name, from age to age the same,
And he must win the battle.

-3-
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us:
We will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us;
The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him:
His rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

-4-
That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The spirit and the gifts are our through him who with us sideth;
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

#28
BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS

-1-
Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love;
The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.

-2-
We share our mutual woes, our mutual burdens bear,
And often for each other flows the sympathizing tear.

-3-
From sorrow, toil, and pain, and sin, we shall be free;
And perfect love and friendship reign through all eternity.

#29
THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATION

-1-
The church’s one foundation is the Father, our God;
She is the new creation by water and the word;
From heaven he came and sought her to be his holy bride
With his own love he bought her, and for her Life he died.

-2-
Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation one God, one faith, one birth;
One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food,
And to one hope she presses, with every grace endued.

-3-
‘Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation of peace forevermore;
Till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest,
And the great church victorious shall be the church at rest.

#30
ALL HAIL THE POWER

-1-
All hail the power of Jesus’ name; let angels prostrate fall;
Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him God of all;
Bring forth the royal diadem, and crown him God of all.

-2-
Let every kindred, every tribe, on this terrestrial ball,
To him all majesty ascribe, and crown him God of all;
To him all majesty ascribe, and crown him God of all.

#31
THESE THINGS SHALL BE

-1-
These things shall be: a loftier race than e’er the world hath known shall rise
With flame of freedom in their souls; and light of knowledge in their eyes.

-2-
Nation with nation, land with land, in-armed shall Live as comrades free;
In every heart and brain shall throb the pulse of one fraternity.

-3-
New arts shall bloom of loftier mold, and mightier music thrill the skies,
And every life shall be a song, when all the earth is paradise.

#32
LEAD, KINDLY LIGHT

Lead, kindly light, amid the encircling gloom,
Lead thou me on; the night is dark, and I am far from home;
Lead thou me on; keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene – one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now lead thou me on.
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will; remember not past years.
