C O N F I D E N T I A L SECTION 1 OF 2 GEORGETOWN 3941

E.O. 11652: GDS
TAGS: CASC (PEOPLE’S TEMPLE) GY
SUBJECT: SURVIVING MEMBERS OF PEOPLE’S TEMPLE
REF: A) GEORGETOWN 3821 B) GEORGETOWN 3884 C) GEORGETOWN 3886 D) GEORGETOWN 3895 E) GEORGETOWN 3898 F) GEORGETOWN 3922 G) GEROGETOWN 3932 H) USS CO-2-78, 978 (ALL NOTAL)

1. The police have stated that Miguel de Pina (84 years old) is free to leave the country, and the embassy is assisting his grandson, currently in Guyana, with travel arrangements. He plans to leave tomorrow, Sunday, via PanAm to new york barring objections from the doctor.

2. Police officials have indicated that the others who are not directly connected to either the murder of Congressman Ryan and his party or to the murder of Sharon Amos and her children will be released first, but their names will not be known until Monday November 27. Others will be asked to remain in Guyana until the preliminary hearing scheduled for Dec 6 or 7 1978.

3. Following is current status of the various groups involved in the people’s temple who are in Georgetown:

A. Lamaha gardens, People’s Temple HQs -46- there have been two additions and two deletions from this group. The additions are Clifford Gieg and Herbert Newell [names originally withheld by State Department], who were brought into Georgetown aboard the temple’s boat “Cudjoe” (ref f). The two deletions are Charles Beikman, who has been arrested for the mruders [murders] of Sharon Amos and her children and is in prison awaiting trial (ref a) and Miguel de Pina, who has been removed to hospital (see above).

B. Park Hotel -29- this group is composed of the 25 formerly listed as the Eve Leary Police HQs group, who elected to stay there at first but were persuaded to go the the hotel, and Teena Bogue, who was just released from the hospital. It also contains the two carter brothers and Michael J. Prokes, who were formerly held in the police lock-up at Lve Leary [Eve Leary] but who have been released by the police. The police appear convinced that the last-named three were not involved in either the airport incident or the mass suicide. The others at the Park Hotel are not so sure, and the presence of the Carters and Prokes has caused some consternation. We have advised the police that we would prefer that the carters and Prokes be lodged elsewhere, in order to avoid any confrontation, but they have taken them to the Park Hotel.

C. In public hospital -3- Bom [Thom] Bogue, Monica Bagby and Miguel de Pina.

D. In prison -2- Larry Layton and Charles Beikman (refs a and g)

4. The names of most of the surviving members, with their planned destinatons [destinations], are listed below. The information on the remainder will be supplied with available. As we receive exact information on releases we will inform all addressees. We ask that informtion [information] not be made public in view of surviving members’ fear of reprisal.

5. For USSS [US Secret Service]: (ref h) detailed information on the Jonestown basketball team is not readily avaialbe [available], but Jim Jones, Jr, Stevean [Stephan] Jones and Lee Ingrahm [Ingram] are believed to be members of the squad. Information of the “hit team” is sketchy and unconfirmed.
