For information of receiving offices, the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) has advised FBI HQ that it is currently conducting an extensive investigation into the group known as the Peoples Temple and it its members to determine the degree of danger which the group may present to protectees of the USSS. FBI HQ is maintaining close liaison with USSS Headquarters and a detail of Secret Service agents is in place with the FBI Comand [Command] Post at Charleston, South Carolina, awaiting the return of survivors from Guyana.

In this regard, Columbia Division at Charleston, South Carolina, is to ensure that the USSS be notified when Stephen [Stephan] Jones will be available for interview by USSS. Additionally, the Charleston Comand Post is to coordinate locally with the SIAC, USSS at Charleston to provide USSS with the manifest of Peoples Temple members who will be transported from Guyana to Charleston, South Carolina. Investigative responsibilities of USSS are to be accomodated [accommodated].

Columbia should also attempt to determine the whereabouts of Peoples Temple member Don Sly (a reported “hit man”) and furnish this information to USSS.

All receiving offices should be alert for any information identifying members of the Peoples Temple basketball team in Guyana, the “hit team”, or “Angels” of the Peoples Temple and furnish such information locally to USSS and to FBI HQ for relay to USSS Headquarters.

Receiving offices should cooperate at the local level with USSS regarding investigation of the Peoples Temple.
