Ambassador [John] Burke met this date with Cabinet Minister [Hamilton] Green. Mr. Green express mild displeasure with the news media accounts of FBI Agents entering Guyana in connection with this matter, especially since the information was printed in the local newspapers in Guyana. Mr. Green said the news, however, did not present a serious problem to the GOG. In this regard, State Department has advised the FBI by cable from the American Embassy, Georgetown, Guyana, to the Secretary of State, Washington, D.C., dated 12/1/78, that there is no longer any need to embargo in the United States the news of the FBI team’s visit to Guyana. Any news release, however, should emphasize the technical nature of the FBI activity in Guyana.

Return of Survivors of Jonestown to the United States

The State Department has advised that it is most likely now that all returning survivors of Jonestown will be transported via commercial airlines to JFK Airport, New York City rather than by military airlift. In this regard ADIC Neil J. Welch, New York Division, has been advised and contingency plans regarding the processing of survivors are being developed at this time to insure that all returning survivors are thoroughly interviewed under optimum conditions.

Results of the Forensic Autopsy Performed Upon the Body of Congressman Leo J. Ryan

Michael Novelli, Administrative Aide to Congressman Ryan, contacted FBI HQ Command Post 11/30/78, requesting a copy of the autopsy on behalf of the Ryan family. He was advised by Deputy Assistant Director Ingram that the autopsy report had just been made available to the FBI from the United States Department of State approximately 15 minutes prior to his phone call and the FBI would immediately contact U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney in San Francisco and if no objections, a copy would be promptly made available to Ryan’s office. Departmental Attorney Michael Abell and US Attorney James Hunter contacted, voiced no objections, and one copy was made available to Attorney George R. Corey handling Ryan’s estate.
