Re FBI HQ teletype, December 5, 1978.

Re Lawrence [Laurence] Eugene Schacht:

On December 5, 1978, Mrs. [deleted name], nee [name and address deleted], Oregon, telephone contact area code [deleted], former member of Peoples Temple (PT), advised she left PT in later part of 1972 when she was 17 years of age, and she did not have any formal training as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She stated she received her LPN this past year from [information deleted], California. She stated she knew Lawrence Eugene Schacht, but he was not a doctor when she knew him. She stated she had no information concerning

any planned poisoning of PT members or any other information concerning where Schacht may have obtained poison. She stated the following individuals were registered nurses and members of PT, however, she does not know their whereabouts: Mrs. Rozinco [Joyce Rozynko] (phonetic), Lois Ponts, Faith Kice (residing somewhere in Texas), Jan Phillips, Joyce Beam, and Vicki Moore (daughter-in-law of Archibald Ijames).

Reinterview of Phil Kerns is not being conducted UACB [Unless Advised to Contrary by the Bureau], as Kerns is currently writing a book on the Jonestown cult, and this book is in its final stages. In addition, subsequent to the initial interview, Kerns appeared in local news media attempting to promote interest in the book and mentioned FBI interest in Kerns, thereby lending additional credit to his personal importance. It is also learned that Kerns has contacted FBI, Portland, soliciting information far in excess of what he originally provided.

On December 6, 1978, FBI Portland did however, re-interview [name deleted], noting his cooperative status and past association with Schacht.

[Name deleted] stated Lawrence Eugene Schacht’s education was financed to considerable extent by his parents, noting that Schacht’s father allegedly had his own business. [Name deleted] stated PT did, however, finance some of Schacht’s education while he was attending medical school in Mexico. [Name deleted] stated that including entrance fee to medical college in Mexico and semester fees, etc., he estimated that PT probably spent close to $10,000 on Schacht during his medical training in Mexico.

[Name deleted] stated he left PT in January 1974, and as of that time, had no personal knowledge Schacht had in fact, graduated from medical school.

[Name deleted] stated reasons Schacht joined PT are difficult to define, however, advised Schacht was at great low point in his life and became entranced with so-called mysticism espoused by PT. [Schacht]

at one time, told [name deleted] he came to California because he had received spiritual callings from PT. [Name deleted] added Schacht was what he would describe as an introvert, who at time of joining PT, was heavily involved in drugs.

[Name deleted] stated at the time he left PT, Schacht had no special position within PT other than the fact Jim Jones desperately wanted a doctor for PT, and Schacht displayed a willingness to become PT doctor.

[Name deleted] stated at the time he left PT, Schacht’s closest associate was probably Jeff Carey, who was last known to reside in Redwood Valley. [Name deleted] added that Schacht was also close to Archie Ijames and if Ijames still alive, Joyce Beam, from San Francisco, would probably know his whereabouts.

[Name deleted] was unable to identify Becky (LNU) [last name unknown], however stated there was Negro female in PT whose name was Becky. As [Name deleted], Becky was close
