Memorandum
Date: 12/7/78
To: Mr. D.W. Moore
From: [name withheld]
Subject: RYMUR
PURPOSE: To advise you of the details of the recovery of certain FBI documents located at Jonestown, Guyana.
RECOMMENDATION: None – for information
DETAILS: On 12/6/78, three Agents, [names withheld] from FBI HQ and Legat, Caracas, Robert J. Oglesby, Jr., were reviewing evidence in the Vice Consul’s office at Georgetown, Guyana. They were given access to this office by Consul Doug Ellice who had been given the key and permission to allow these Agents to enter the office by Ambassador John Burke. While searching through evidence they found papers which they believed to be of vital interest to FBI HQ and requested me to carry these papers along with film to be developed and a copy of the tape which Jimmy Jones recorded throughout the suicide at People’s Temple in Jonestown. On Wednesday, 12/6/78, I traveled to Washington, DC and delivered the evidence to Agents in FBI HQ on 12/7/78. This evidence had been recovered by Vice Consul at Caracas, Richard Martin and locked in the office until the time when our Agents received access to the room. To my knowledge, no one else viewed these documents other than our Agents in Georgetown.
