Subject: RYMUR

By teletype 12/13/78, San Francisco advised the U.S. Attorney (USA), San Francisco is in receipt of a letter dated 12/12/78 from San Francisco District Attorney Joseph Freitas. Freitas’ letter requests: (1) a report on the progress of the RYMUR investigation; (2) that a representative of the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office be included during the interview of witnesses; and (3) access to any Grand Jury proceedings in which there is developed evidence of a violation of state law.

The USA advised he is reviewing this letter and will confer with SAC, San Francisco during the a.m. of 12/13/78 concerning his response. He is considering informing the San Francisco District Attorney that the FBI and the USA’s Office will not furnish results of this investigation in view of corruption allegations involving the Office of the District Attorney. The USA is considering informing the California Attorney General of any state violations.

San Francisco advises they have information indicating possible corruption in the District Attorney’s Office in connection with voter fraud investigation cover-ups. It is noted [3 lines deleted, likely relate to employment in the District Attorney’s Office by Temple attorney Tim Stoen]. Sources have advised that Jim Jones was responsible due to his close association with District Attorney Freitas [one line deleted].
