USA, San Francisco, in receipt of hand-delivered letter dated December 12, 1978, from Joseph Freitas, San Francisco DA. This letter requests that in view of possible violations of state law by the PT within his jurisdiction that his office be advised: (1) the progress of these investigations, (2) that a representative of his office be along during the interview of witnesses, and (3) “we are requesting access to any grand jury proceedings in which there is developed evidence of a violation of state law.”

Bureau has previously been advised that San Francisco DA has personally shown unusual interest in this case. Sources indicate he is gravely concerned that prior violations

discovered at this time may implicate himself or personnel in his office. San Francisco this date in receipt of information indicating possible corruption in DA’s office in connection with voter fraud investigation cover-up. [Several lines deleted, likely relate to employment in the District Attorney’s Office by Temple attorney Tim Stoen] of Reverend Jim Jones. According to sources, Jones was responsible, due to his close association with DA Freitas, for [one line deleted].

USA advised he is reviewing above letter and will confer with SAC, San Francisco, a.m., December 13, 1978, concerning his response. At this time, he is considering informing DA that FBI and his office will not furnish results of PT investigation in view of corruption allegations involving Office of DA. USA considering informing California Attorney General of any state violations.

Bureau should note that USA personally advised DA’s office last week that FBI and his office would promptly furnish the DA

any information indicating possible state violations falling within his jurisdiction. In spite of this assurance, the DA has seen fit to direct the above letter to USA’s office.
