Serial 1305-7

[Editor’s note: One of the subjects of this serial whose name is deleted – but which is revealed on page 9 – is Clifford Gieg, who survived November 18, by being on the boat the Cudjoe on the Kaituma River. The deleted information from the memorandum – designated by brackets – which is known to the editor has been indicated by red type. In addition, many of the FBI interviews summarized in the FD-302s of the RYMUR investigation deleted the verb following the deleted name of the interview subject; most oftentimes, that word was “advised.”]

[Name deleted] [Clifford Gieg] was interviewed in the presence of [name deleted], Special Agent (SA), Secret Service, at Hangar 17, John F. Kennedy Airport. [Gieg advised] he was not aware of any discussions regarding the assassination of Congressman Ryan and his party nor of any practice drills for ambush of anyone who disturbed the Jonestown compound.

[Gieg advised] he had been present at one “White Night” when there was a suicide drill. The PT members were asked if they were ready to die for Jones and all replied they were. A liquid purported to be poison was given out and the members lined up to drink it. After a while, Jones told him it was not poison but a test. [Gieg advised] narcotics were not used to facilitate the suicide drills. Jones told the PT members “Don’t worry about the people who aren’t here, they will be taken care of.”

[Gieg does] not know of the existence of an assassination squad.

[Gieg advised] he became involved with the PT through his mother, [name deleted], in Redwood Valley, Ukiah, California, when he was [several words deleted]. In about 1974 or 1975, he moved to San Francisco where he resided with [name deleted] and continued his affiliation with the PT.

Around the period April 10-15, 1976, [line deleted] he stopped at 41 Dennis Street in Lamaha Gardens before continuing on to Jonestown where he arrived via the Cudjoe, a boat belonging to the PT. [Gieg advised] when he arrived there, the colony was still in its infancy with only about 60 people there.

[Gieg advised] he survived the mass suicide because he and [Herbert Newell] had taken [line deleted] stated that he was told by Teddy McMurray that “Jim (Jones) want you to take [line deleted] he departed Jonestown at about 10 AM and arrived at Kummaka at about 3 PM. He said the first he knew of the mass suicide was when he was arrested by the Guyanese authorities at 12:30 AM on the following morning. [Gieg advised] he did not have any knowledge regarding relocation plans in the event of mass suicide.

[Gieg advised] about six months ago, two Soviets had come to Jonestown, one official and a doctor who was there to see Jim Jones about an illness of his.

When asked about Jones’ bodyguards, [Gieg advised] Jim Jones usually walked around with Tim “Day” Jones, Jimmy Jones, and Johnny Cobb.

[Gieg advised] at meetings, Jim Jones had praised Lieutenant Governor of California Dimalley [Mervyn Dymally] and San Francisco Mayor Masconi [George Moscone] had been at the PT in San Francisco on a couple of occasions. [Gieg advised] Jones had helped Masconi to get elected by having PT members assist in electioneering. He also advised Harvey Milk had been at the PT in San Francisco.

[Gieg advised] he had no information regarding Paula Adams being “Jones’ sexual secretary” and having sexually compromised government officials, nor had he any information regarding a primitive nuclear device.

[Page 5]
BQ 89-495

[Gieg advised] a “white night” was a practice alert in which the Security Force was dispersed around the perimeter of the camp and the members gathered at the Pavilion where Jim Jones harangued the members.

[Gieg advised] the first “white night” came about when the Guyanese government did not want to license Dr. Schacht as a physician. He advised they were held whenever anything went against the movement and were held as often as once a week and lasted as long as three days. All these meetings were not dying for this or that and some security force members guarded the people in the Pavilion.

[Gieg has] no idea where the poison was acquired and did not know whether Schacht was aware of the Contingency Plans in the event of Jones’ death or the fall of the PT including mass suicide or death of Congressman Ryan.

[Page 20]
BQ 89-495

[Gieg advised] Schacht as being a “Schizo”, weird, and a former drug addict whose education was financed by the PT. [Gieg knew] nothing of Schacht’s friends and associates in the United States. He believed Schacht was a licensed doctor although he had never seen the license.

[Gieg knew] nothing of Becky Last Name Unknown (LNU), John Alvin Cleveland, or John Rueben Herrera.

[Gieg advised] he had no knowledge of foreign bank accounts belonging to the PT, Jim Jones, or anyone else.

[Gieg advised] there was a “silent weapons” team at Jonestown which practiced with bow and arrows as well as crossbow weapons. The members were Tom Grubbs, Marie Rankin, Bob Rankin, and Dick Grubbs alias Ken Norton.

[Gieg advised] he knew nothing about a PT in Venezuela. He advised Joyce Parks had gone with elderly patients to a hospital in Caracas, Venezuela, and as a result not been present at the mass suicide. He reported he had heard Parks had gone from Caracas to San Francisco and was living on Page Street.

[Gieg advised] the basketball team had left Jonestown about two weeks before the mass suicide and were to have been away in Georgetown until December 27, 1978.

[Gieg advised] he felt that his brother [Stanley Gieg] who had died at Jonestown, would never have willingly taken poison. He stated his brother was a mechanic and had become involved in the same way as himself.

[Gieg advised] he had heard that Mike Prokes, Tim Carter, and Mike Carter, who had attempted to take money out of Jonestown, had been given handguns and told by Jim Jones “Your job is to stay alive.”

[Gieg advised] he thought it strange some survivors had escaped leaving members of the immediate family behind. He provided the following list of these individuals who had all stayed together at the Park Hotel in Georgetown:

Richard Clark Son Cleveland
Robert Paul Wife and baby

[Page 21]
BQ 89-495

Johnny Franklin Wife and child
Tim Carter Wife and child
Mike Carter Wife and child
Dale Parks Child

He also advised none of the above would speak with him and appeared to be “scared of him”.

[Gieg advised] he knew nothing of any importation or exportation of illegal drugs, nor had he had ever observed anyone using same.

[Gieg advised] PT members were taught “not to question” and were discouraged from leaving because even an indication one desired to leave would mean confrontation and humiliation before the other PT members. He advised he personally enjoyed what he was doing in Jonestown and had no desire to leave.

[Gieg advised] he had seen many weapons at Jonestown and a lot of ammunition. He stated he believed there were about 40 rifles (.308 semiautomatic, 30-30 rifles, .22 caliber rifles), and about 20 shotguns (some automatic), and pistols. He advised he had seen a big pistol in the hand of Jim Jones and had heard it was a ..357 Magnum. He advised when Jim Jones wanted this gun he would say, “Bring me my Bible”.

[Gieg advised] that PT members on Social Security would be brought their checks by Security Force members who would wait while they were endorsed and then take them from the recipients.

[Gieg advised] a box was used to punish PT members by placing them inside, and that they were usually released on the following day. He advised thoresene [Thorazine] had been administered in the infirmary to troublemakers and to people who had attempted to escape. He stated the Security Force was used to bring back the escapees.

[Gieg advised] Larry Layton with weird and that his sister Debbie Blakey had left the PT. Jim Jones was angry at Blakey for causing problems to the PT and would often say he was going to get “that bitch”. [Gieg advised] this puts a lot of pressure on Blakey’s mother, Lisa Layton, who was at Jonestown. Lisa Layton eventually died and [Gieg advised] Larry Layton blamed her death on Jim Jones.

[Page 22]
BQ 89-495

By way of background, [Gieg advised] the PT was not really a church as such but more of a social experiment. He advised they held no services on Sunday and when there was a meeting which was not a “White Night”, Jim Jones would advise the PT members of current news and there would be entertainment.

The following description [of Gieg] was obtained through observation and interview:
