1. Congressman Burton interested.

2. Consul has confirmed Caroline Sue Looman is presently in Jonestown, N.W. Guyana. He plans to visit area ASAP to have personal private contact to determine whether Miss Looman wishes to dissociate herself from People’s Temple and return home.

3. Consul has been in touch with People’s Temple organization in Georgetown and is treating this inquiry as normal Welfare/Whereabouts problem. He was told by members of the People’s Temple and Georgetown that entire scenario regarding Miss Looman began when she was informed by her brother that their mother was seriously ill and it was for that reason she requested him to send her a plane ticket. When she later learned that her mother was not quite so ill she decided

to go to the interior. While People’s Temple members here have been reasonably cooperative it was apparent they would prefer Consul to have only telephone contact. However, he has insisted that he must see her personally to verify her good health and well-being as is done in all such cases.

4. Embassy would appreciate if Department can confirm whether information about mother is correct. Consul will travel to Jonestown as soon as transportation arrangements can be made which will probably be on August 29 or 30. Jonestown is located in a remote area in N. W. Guyana, close to the Venezuelan border and is not reached easily or quickly from Georgetown. Department will be informed immediately of results of contact.
