SUBJECT: W/W GREGORY LEWIS WATKINS, DOB GREGORY LEWIS WATKINS
REF: (A) 77 STATE 308414 ( B) DEPT. OM DATED DEC. 28, 1977

1. Our Consul had personal, private interview on Jan. 11, 1978 at the People’s Temple agricultural community with Gregory Watkins [deleted word] of your constituents. [Deleted line] Gregory appeared healthy and satisfied with his present conditions. He is presently studying biology and assisting in the community carpentry shop. He stated very emphatically that he was not being held against his will or being forced to work long grueling hours in the fields.

2. The Consul did not find living conditions at the town as described in [deleted name] letter to you. All members of the community are housed in small dormitory style prefabricated houses. They appear well clothed and well fed. While some members of the community or working in the fields at hard, physical tasks they appeared to be doing so willingly. The Consul did not receive the impression that any activity was forced.

3. Privacy Act authorization granted orally by Watkins to pass concerns of paragraph one to Senator Cranston and [deleted name].
