SUBJECT: SOCIAL SECURITY CHECKS – PEOPLES TEMPLE

Since the survivors of the Peoples Temple mission are to be transported back to the United States this month, all Social Security checks for beneficiaries who are using the mission’s Box 893 address have been stopped effective immediately. The Embassy will not receive checks dated December 1, 1978, for such beneficiaries.

We understand that Social Security checks were found in the possession of the mission village. Pls advise by telegram if any of the checks in the possession of the mission village bore addresses other than Box 893. If so, specify the name and Social Security claim number on each such check. This information is needed by the Social Security Administration to ascertain whether other beneficiaries may have moved to the mission village without having their addresses formerly changed.

This message has been cleared with the Office of Special Consular Services.
