SUBJECT PEOPLES TEMPLE/ASSASSINATION THREAT AGAINST PRESIDENT & VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
The United States Secret Service has been advised by the FBI that they are sending an agent to Guyana to meet with the GOG [Government of Guyana] during the week of 4/23/79. The USSS continues to conduct an extensive investigation of the Peoples Temple and its members to determine the degree of danger they present to protectees of this service. This investigation has been conducted in close conjunction with the FBI investigation of this group. The USSS would like to send one agent to Guyana to join in these meetings. The FBI has advised the service that they have no objections to our participation in these meetings.
The Embassy is requested to advise if the GOG has any objections to this service sending an agent to Guyana to coordinate our investigation with the FBI.
