San Francisco is nearing completion review of 15 Jonestown crates of evidence. Of portions to be retained, it is now necessary to categorize, itemize, and dictate descriptions for approximately 20,000 pieces of evidence. In addition, San Francisco is receiving Jonestown reel to reel tape recordings. When duplication is completed by lab, San Francisco will have approximately 1100 hours of tapes to be reviewed on revox machines. Review will be made utilizing computerized code books furnished to San Francisco by headquarters. After

review of each tape it will be necessary to dictate descriptive FD-302s.

It is imperative that tapes and evidence be reviewed in a reasonable period of time, certainly prior to conclusion of San Francisco grand jury which is currently nearing its final stage.

Based on San Francisco telephone call to Headquarters’ Lab, Engineering Section, and previous review by San Francisco of over 300 tape cassettes; and San Francisco’s previous processing of Jonestown evidence; it is estimated that to complete review of additional tape and evidence above, San Francisco will need approximately 300 agent days in addition to the continuing need of 2 full-time agents to handle daily operations and daily use of San Francisco agent personnel for outside interview and investigation. San Francisco, to date, has exerted in excess of 12,000 agent hours in instant matter which has produced heavy burden on the San Francisco office.

San Francisco desires 10 agents to be assigned full-time on above project using revox machines previously furnished San Francisco which would allow San Francisco to furnish New York urgently needed 6 revox machines.

Bureau requested to furnish San Francisco with 2 – 3 New York agents (BQMRA) knowledgeable in RYMUR to work with 2 – 3 San Francisco agents also knowledgeable in RYMUR to work in conjunction with 5 agents from the Bureau designated field offices. This will make available 5 experienced RYMUR agents to work with 5 other agents for a total complement of 10 agents to work on above special assignment on 6 day work week for a minimum of 4 weeks.

Bureau is also requested to expedite the duplication of the Guyana tapes and make available to San Francisco as it is desirous that this project be implemented on April 30, 1979.
