Re San Francisco airtel to Bureau, dated May 1, 1979; US Embassy, Georgetown, Guyana teletype to Secretary of State, April 27, 1979.

During interview of US Consul Douglas V. Ellice, Georgetown, Guyana, revealed existence of tape recordings made by him on November 18, 1978. Recordings include incoming and outgoing telephone calls from residence of Mr. Ellice. Tapes also contain audible radio transmissions in background. At time of interview Ellice furnished Xerox copies of handwritten notes that he had made weekend of April 21-22, 1979. These notes reflect time sequence and subject of each telephone call

existing on tapes from a period of November 11-18, 1978.

The Bureau requested to direct official communication to Legal Department, US Department of State, requesting original tapes of all recorded communications on November 18, 1978, conducted by Ellice.

On receipt of tapes, FBI Lab, Radio Engineering Section requested to duplicate, transcribe, and attempt to amplify radio transmissions and background and furnish San Francisco. Xerox copies of 5 pages of notes by Ellice being sent in separate airtel.
