BB-2-uuu

Sharon Amos

Visit Balwant Singh and a friend Hilbert 27/7/78 (Sharon, Maria K [Katsaris], Hue [Fortson])

-Maria and I went to Georgetown Hospital with a Dr. Descalso to evaluate Bobby’s [Stroud] care so we were back late. I dropped Maria off so she could great the guests and went to get the refreshments from Paula so by the time I got there it was late and they were about to leave

-but this man Hilbert did most of the talking/ he had been in the US living for 15 years. Had tried to open a business for parking cars and ran into some difficulty because they expect a pay off and they try to get it one way or another. They first hinted about it being a benefit for policeman’s ball etc. and he said he wasn’t the owner (which he was) but he pretended a little old lady was the owner and even had a little old lady go with him to get a license

-they were going to charge him $80,000 for the license and he said he’d see about getting it elsewhere and they said they’d still have to arrange the transfer meaning he’d still end up paying the whole thing

-so he had no luck with this

-he has some property that was left to him in East Burbice/ he’s going to have to do something with it or it will be taken from him (referendum of Land to the Tiller) – he wants to see what he can do or if we can use it/ would like to visit Jonestown and talk about it

-said he saw the articles in the paper in SF but knew it was a lie/ said he had gone by the Temple and saw all the crates marked Guyana and since he was returning to Guyana he called PT and said he’d like to see if he could be of help, that he was Guyanese etc. They never called him back/ said he knew it was a sensitive time to call because of a bad article just coming out and we probably thought he was a spy (he said this with no rancor)

-said he thought [Forbes] Burnham was doing good things for the country (I tried to find out his politics since Balwant is supposedly in some opposition to the govt.) but Hilbert was very positive to the govt.

-said he wants to be part of guyana and he’s had enough of the US to teach him a lesson of what goes on but feels it was good as he learned from it

-Balwant Singh was very friendly/ said DaCosta had made him promise not to abandon PT to stay by us and to visit Jonestown/ DaCosta had tried to take Balwant to Jonestown but something came up andhe couldn’t make it

-Balwant was very very friendly/ he says he has trouble with his appetite, likes to eat

-he said when he heard the other man talk that he hadnt had an opportunity to see that part of the US (or know about it)
