Mohammed Hamalidan [Mohamed Hamaludin]: Visit to his house 10/8/78 (sharon & tony)

-Hamalidan greeted in us in a friendly manner and had us come upstairs/ he is on leave and trying to catch up with things in his house by painting his house

-his house is nice but not overly wealthy

-his wife is kind of a shy friendly woman and he has 2 daughters that I saw/ one of them with glasses / he said she is 11 and just passed her 2nd form or something like that/ she passed high and he promised her a trip to NY if he can get together the money/ the Hamalidans have relatives in NY

-I told him if he ever was in California we could assist in housing etc., but he said it’s not likely he’ll be in that area

-we were talking about the situation in the US/ and we gave him some background on black elected officials and showed him the pictures from Ebony of those who were under attack/ told him Fleming and Goodlett would be coming and are very supportive of PT (that was in the letter that we were told to send to him with the Fleming articles)

-told him about Donald Fried – he was very interested and said he could notify Cana and they could run an article about him and maybe Mohammed could interview him for the paper

-told him the background of how there are some in the US who don’t want any socialist group to survive and are against an interracial group being too successful/ told them of the same tactics used against Synanon because they were a cooperative and were successful

-mentioned that MLKing wasn’t really a threat until he got the white workers organized as well as the black

-told him that’s why we were concerned about press here and cAll Blackmon didn’t want all the negative aired because it just puts it in people’s minds and some people tend to believe anything in print even if its refuted and also why dignify lies when the truth is so much more dramatic

-he was very receptive to all this/ took part in the discussion about black officials and Andrew Young, and knew about Diggs

-we said we just wanted to be left alone to grow cassava

-asked him if he could come out on a charter and first he said he couldn’t give us a date right now but is interested and planned to come sometime during his leave

-he wanted to confirm with Cana that they would be interested in using a story about PT so it wouldn’t be a total waste if he came out (in case the local press wouldn’t use it – I think he was referring to the prior stand off on us)

-I told him that Shirley Field-Ridley was sympathetic to the idea and so was Minister Mingo who thought it was very important/ also Carl Blackmon had agreed to go (this seemed to change his mind) as I told him Carl had a wedding coming up but had said he would go anytime

-he said that he would come anytime /just let him know and he’d drop everything for the day

-he wanted us to contact him when Fried comes in

-talked about Huey Newton and the frame-up against him/ told him that the man who did the story at one time wanted to do a positive story about us but his paper wouldn’t print it and how this woman who says he raped her / they don’teven give a name so it’s an obvious frame-up

-he said that in Guyana Transcendental Meditation is the thing/ even Steve Noel Ministry of Trade is involved in it and other Ministers of Govt (or some of them)

-we talked about some people’s narrow mindedness in religIon/ he said Hindu’s are not accepting of any converts/ you can leave the Hindu faith but you can’t convert into it Mohammed is a Moslem

(over)

Mohammed Hamalidan Pg 2

-he had said something about Rashid Osmon and I said that wasn’t he the one who’s very religious – he’s 7th Day adventist and that’s when we started talking about some people who don’t accept other’s religions

-I asked about his suggestions for people to come up on a press charter

-he said that HArry Harper is in charge ofthe whole Sunday spread and that is read by 3 times as many people as the daily/he’s Sunday Editor

-he said that Winston Oudkerk is the Chief photographer

-Herman Singh is not the best feature writer, he said, he’s a spot writer

-Courney Gibson would be good as he’s pro-socialist

-[Guyana Minister of Works and Transportation] Steve Naraine – writes forthe Citizen and isn’t really a member of the Chronicle Staff (however he has a desk there I found so I don’t exactly understand this unless both papers are printed the same place)

-Grace Josef- primarily does women’s stories

-Angela Massih – she’s with the Sunday Chronicle – she’s pro-socialist

-there are 200,000 readers on Sunday/ daily is a 1/3 of that

-he said to come by any time and even come by just for a visit

-he asked what happened to that negative article stuff he gave us/ he didn’t ask in a really pushy way/ I told him what the instructions were “didn’t you get it, we brought it in etc.” – he said no, I told him to check again as I knew it came in. Told him that maybe if it wasn’t there, it might have been taken to the wrong paper but I knew it came in.

-he asked when it came in and I said a couple of weeks ago (as I had talked tohim about it before)

-he didn’t seem upset about it or didn’t say this time Cana was pushing for it (unless Cana has another copy of it and isn’t worried?????)
