On November 22, 1978, [name deleted], California Department of Justice, Sacramento, advised his office has received a copy of a report from the State of California Department of Health and Welfare, dated October, 1977. This report pertained to an investigation into the People’s Temple (PT) and its people.

The report stated that [name deleted], U.S. State Department, Bureau of Special Consular Services, Washington, D. C., telephone [number deleted] had a complete listing of all the

people in Jonestown at that time. There were said to be 850 people including 200 children.

In other information furnished by [name deleted], he learned that for investigators from the U.S. State Department had traveled to Jonestown, Guyana prior to Ryan’s visit. These investigators reportedly were to look into allegations about Jones, but after arriving in Jonestown, those four investigators were never heard from again.

WFO [Washington Field Office] will contact [name deleted] at the State Department for lists of people in Guyana to aid in identification.

Bureau, through liaison with the State Department, is requested to ascertain the validity of the information relating to the State Department investigators in Guyana.
