1. (U) [Unclassified] Guyanese police are now holding four cult members arrested at Jonestown. One of the four, Larry Layton, one of cult leader Jones 3 top aides, has been formally charged in Georgetown with murdering Congressman Ryan and 4 other persons. The men were all said to be carrying large amounts of money when arrested at the camp. GOG [Government of Guyana] has issued a critical health hazard

notice for the Northwest District.
2. (U) California police are reporting that about 200 cult members in the San Francisco area are under police guard and more are requesting protection hourly. Cult members believe that Jones set aside a large sum of money to pay for the assassination of people who did not commit suicide on order. D

3. (U) A forward operating base has been established at Mathews [Matthews] Ridge. Today aircraft began broadcasting appeals to surviving cult members thought to be hiding in the jungle surrounding the camp. Very few personnel have been found so far. GOG has released a list of 174 names for bodies identified at the camp.
4. (C) [Classified/confidential] Ambassador Mann has requested that all deploying forces come into Georgetown totally self-sufficient to include water. The embassy is attempting to get all personnel billeted together at the airport. There is no potable water source anywhere except the embassy which purifies its own.
5. (C) One UH-1, one UH-58, a U-21 and 3 HH-53s are now operating out of Georgetown/Timehri. For additional UH-1s are enroute. Both HF and secured teletype communications are reported operational

at Georgetown. U.S. Graves/Registration team personnel are in operation at Jonestown.
