The Reports of Jean Brown, Fall 1978

During the four weeks leading up to the deaths in Jonestown, Jean Brown, who worked out of the San Francisco Temple, sent numerous reports to Guyana addressing the numerous issues which were building towards the tragic climax. As much as any other set of documents, these reports show how Temple leaders in the States were addressing the crisis created by the announced plans of Rep. Leo Ryan to travel to Jonestown.

These reports, which the FBI collected and put in its file RYMUR 89-4286-BB-7 – designated “Terri Buford” – are listed below in chronological order. The single PDF has been organized to match the texts.

The Brown reports should be read in the context of other administrative reports from California, as well as the reports written by Terri Buford, even if Buford may have been downplaying or cloaking some of her observations ahead of her departure from the Temple on October 27.

These reports were transcribed and annotated by Cole Waterman. The editors are grateful for his invaluable assistance and considerable eye to detail.
