FBI preliminary tape identification note One Realistic C-120/ for JJ Statements

Date of transcription: 3/29/79

In connection with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s investigation into the assassination of U.S. Congressman LEO J. RYAN at Port Kaituma, Guyana, South America, on November 18, 1978, a tape recording was obtained. This tape recording was located in Jonestown, Guyana, South America, and was turned over to U.S. Officials in Guyana and subsequently transported to the United States.

On March 28, 1979, Special Agent (name deleted) reviewed the tape numbered 1B68-11. This tape was reviewed and the following is a transcript of side one:

“I am a confirmed and committed Socialist. I am confirmed and committed to JIM JONES as well I have been for years and I always will be, however, years ago when I joined this group I was a passivist [pacifist]. I really believed that we could effect meaningful social change using Democratic practices. I no longer believe that’s true. Now I think the only way in the words of MAO to change society is through the barrel of a gun and I’m committed to that principle as well. It’s only JIM’s guidance that has stopped me from acting out in this way because I see no other use or meaning for my life. In the past I’ve done a number of things for the Socialist cause that are not acceptable to the society or could not be construed in any way as being legal, but these are not considerations of mine. The only consideration I have is the advancement of the Socialist cause.”

“My name is JEAN FORESTER BROWN. I believe in JIM JONES. I believe in Socialism, but I do not believe that it is possible any longer in this country to effect change and to bring about Socialism without violent revolt, and I am pledged by everything that I hold dear that I will give my life in a violent overthrow of this government, and if it comes to it, I will stick a grenade or a bomb in my body and go to the Senate or the Congress of this country and blow myself and this Government up. I am committed to this Socialist revolution and the violent manner against the better judgment of my pastor who has cautioned me against it but I can do no other.”

“This is JUNE CRYM. For years I have been a Socialist. I believe in Socialism as the only way, the only way to effect a change in this country is to go about it through violent means. We have reached a point where passivism [pacifism] does not work. If I have the chance and I will take it any time I can, I will do anything I can to blow up any part of this Government. I will take part or conspire in any thing I can to destroy this Government. I will assassinate President CARTER. I will do what I can to destroy the Senate or any part of this Government that continues this terrible course of events existing now in this country. The only thing that has kept me from going ahead and doing this is my pastor, JIM JONES . I thank him for keeping my temper under control and one of these days if I didn’t have him I would let loose and do what I had had in my mind for years.”

“This is BONNIE BECK and I think that it’s about time that we face up to the reality that I’ve sat here for years and I’ve watched JIM talk about being a passivist [pacifist] and turning the other cheek and trying to educate the people and show kindness and all its gotten me is sick. I think it’s about time that I get on with what I know has to be done. I mean in a way CUSTER had the right idea. You kill them to save them. And my choice at this point is to get rid of the mother fuckers. They’re doing nothing hut causing people to die. They’re causing them to starve. They’re causing them to be sick and I think the best thing right now is to get rid of their ass. I see no other alternative. Everything that he’s spoken about is fine and good but nothing happens. All’s that happens to good people is they get sicker, they get poorer and the mother fuckers get rewarded so fuck them all. I’m ready to off them and I don’t care what anybody says. They’ve had it in my book.”

“This is HARRIET TROPP and I’ve done alot [a lot] of thinking in the past few weeks and I just thought I should make a few things clear. Number one, I’ve been a member of the People’s Temple for seven years and I have seen JIM JONES give his life to the ideals of peaceful change within the system to bring about a more just society. I fully have supported everything he has ever done. I believe in him. I believe in his sincerity and I stand committed to what he believes in, his ideals, and his actions, I have no disagreement with him whatsoever. However, I know that my commitment has always been a more militant one, in the sense that he knows how to convince me not to participate in violent activities or to commit really anti-social acts. And I’ve been reluctantly convinced because I could see the pragmaticism of his point of view. However, what is sincere for him, what is a sincere belief in passivism [pacifism] for him, has always been play acting for me because I am basically a very violent person. And a person who believes in the destruction of this society, in the overthrow of this Government by violent means, and the reinstitution of a completely different economic system and I believe in killing representatives of this Government and of the establishment, the law enforcement. I will do so. The point of time has come into my life where I can no longer maintain myself in a passivistic [pacifistic] organization such as People’s Temple under the guidance of a person like JIM JONES who believes in non-violent change. And I’ve decided that I will in the future work out my political beliefs which are for me, Communist, although Reverend JONES is not a Communist and I will do so, I will take my Communist ideology into the streets with violent activity and destroy, kill, maim, or blow up anything and everything that I feel will be a valid way of protesting the system, which includes law enforcement, PG&E, you know power stations, things like that which I have long planned on doing and have plans to do but I have been prevented from doing this by JIM JONES’ teachings.”

“Hello. My name is RICHARD D. TROPP. All I want to say is I’ve been a member of People’s Temple for many years and JIM JONES is a very compassionate man, but even he is this kind of person and he is very committed to human ideals, I feel he is going about it in entirely the wrong way. Things are not moving fast enough. We got to get some guns. I believe it’s true that revolution comes out of the barrel of a gun. And these mother fucking people who have been ripping off poor people and have been fucking over the world. I got myself together a bunch of people and we’re going to do something about it. We’re not going to sit around here and talk theory and bullshit about this and that. We’re going to get ourselves some of these big wigs. I seen hotels, I know it’s easy to get into these hotels and these convention rooms. Get some guns, get some bombs. We can get this place blown up. We can get these places all blown up. We can get of things done. We better get started on it. And I’m planning on taking action very soon. Don’t know where but I cannot stay any longer a passivist [pacifist]. Any longer anybody that’s non-violent. This is just completely ridiculous. It’s not doing anybody any good. It’s the kind of thing, okay you know we’re just spinning our wheels. We got to get something done so I think we’re going to have to kill some of these people, from the President on down, I mean the Senators, the Congressmen, get some of these corporation heads, board of directors. Right in there at the very top level. Create havoc, terrorism. I think with a bunch of people we can get some people together. I got some contacts with the underground movement, terrorists, NWLF and they said right on we’re going to tear it up. So we going to get it together right away.”

Voices terminate and the rest of the tape is blank. Side two contains telephone call from what appears to be a female complaining to a People’s Temple male concerning excessive and unjust use of her aunt’s funds. Side two also contains some short phone calls and one call from LEE to JIM JONES about DENNIS (apparently DENNIS BANKS) and Treasury investigations.

In connection with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) investigation into the assassination of U.S. Congressman LEO J. This tape recording was located in Jonestown, Guyana, South America, and was turned over to U.S. Officials in Guyana and subsequently transported to the United States.

On June 8, 1979, Special Agent (name deleted) reviewed the tape numbered 1B60-8. This tape was found to contain the following:

JIM JONES, addressing a large room of his followers, is discussing the security problem relating to all of the new people which had just come to Jonestown. The problem lies in the presence of possible CIA Agents in the country. JONES said he was told by a friend in the U. S. Embassy that there was an element in the country which was being controlled by the CIA.

JONES then relates the events leading to and including the Cuban missile crisis of 1963 and describes the events which he experienced while he was in Cuba in the early 1960s. He describes the crises of the time leading up to and including the missile crisis as Cuba’s white nights. He added that he learned about revolution in Cuba.

He said that decadence was being allowed in Jonestown because people could only be expected to make changes slowly, but that they should, at least some of the time, think about things of a revolutionary nature.

He advises that Jonestown is under a white night alert and that several groups of people had not reported; he said that supervisors of these groups should make an accountability check immediately.

He then continues discussion of revolutions around the world, including that of CASTRO in Cuba, the Israeli-Palestinian situation as well as revolution by the Soviet people. The Soviet people have had to face white nights for three years while their country was being invaded.

He complained to the audience that there was a lack of attention during the news broadcasts which are made daily by him and adds that if they had listened they would have known that something was in the wind when he jumped onto Central Supply earlier in the day.

He states then that he would like to be able to fight a revolution and that he was ready to fight for this land on which Jonestown was centered, at the drop of a hat.

He then relates the reason for the white night alert, which consists of a confrontation between him and representatives of the AMA, as well as of the press, whom he had refused admission to Jonestown. The AMA was refusing to give a license to any doctor in Jonestown until an inspection by the AMA had been made.

He then continues to speak of the revolutionary nature of the Soviet Union and the fact that they had won more revolutions than anyone else and had thus shown their revolutionary leadership. He said he would be meeting with the Soviet Union and added that “their wish is our command.” He then began a discussion of the support of the Guyanese ministers for Jonestown, as well as the political situation in Guyana, and relates incidents of civil, racial strife within the United States recently.

He then states that they (Jonestown) were equipped to commit revolutionary suicide if it were to become necessary. He adds that it is immoral to commit selfish suicide or suicide for selfish reasons. He says that if tonight they were to drink some potion, that this would be a revolutionary suicide and that such a suicide would be committed if there were no other alternative. He adds that this would be an honorable thing to do.

He continues by saying that he is glad that there is a point where people die. He says that one should train himself not to react to pain so that he would be steeled against torture designed to extract information.

He says that this reason for coming to Jonestown was to prove that a socialized commune could work.

He says that he is sometimes nervous about some of his followers, which often brings on a white night or a crisis such as this.

He then states that he wants to learn all that he can about assassinations and mentions the movie, “Day of the Jackal” (a movie which deals with a terrorist plot to assassinate French President CHARLES DE GAULLE), and adds that everyone should watch this movie. He says that the movie was obtained by “special concession” for Jonestown. He states that the book is even better. At this point, a female begins to give a briefing on a meeting of the Guyanese ministers. It is mentioned that JONES has made a good friend with the head of the GDF (Guyana Defense Force). JONES reiterates that a state of emergency exists at this time.

Further discussion of the influence of the various Guyanese ministers ensues.

He then mentions, apparently to someone in the audience, that he was not pointing the gun at that person and adds that before “this cannon” goes off, he would have to cock it.

He says that some people need to be reminded not to walk over the hill in order to tell of all of the capabilities of Jonestown. Again a discussion of the power and influence of the various Guyanese ministers who are favorable toward Jonestown continues.

Then an unidentified male mentions that we (Jonestown) had gone through a number of white nights and due to the strategy of JONES had come through them successfully. He then goes into a discussion of the AMA coming into and inspecting the medical facilities in Jonestown, as well as the AMA’s refusal to license a doctor which already had been treating people in this area.

The name TIM STOEN (phonetic) is brought up by JONES, who discusses the possibility that he may be an Agent sent to work against Jonestown.

Throughout the tape, JONES has told people in the audience to stay awake or to wake up. He reminds them that they are in a wartime situation. He says, “Are you people gonna take notice that we’re in a war emergency room?” At this point a sound similar to that of a shot from a shotgun is heard and is followed by the sound of a shotgun being racked and an empty shell casing hitting the floor of the room. JONES then says, “Next time I’m gonna fire it over your heads.”

JONES then relates again the possibility of a CIA Agent being in Jonestown and even in the room where this meeting is being conducted. He then mentions that maybe they will take a flame thrower or this cannon and shoot it out into the trees just in case that there is someone out there with whom someone inside of Jonestown is communicating. He adds that he had reason to believe that someone is predicting the behavior Jonestown too accurately. He says that someone may be getting out of Jonestown and adds that if someone disappears one night, “You’ll understand that they’ve been translated like Jesus was.”

He then asks if a person in the room would like to confess before the matter is dealt with in another way. He relates that someone had been overheard saying that they were lucky that they were not being sent to Georgetown for the show or they would run. JONES again asks that person to talk about it and then says, “Sleep tight tonight. Good dreams.” He continues by saying that that person should either talk about it or they would pay for it and adds that there are witnesses to that statement having been made. He adds that nothing would happen if that person were to get up and talk about it at this time.

At that point the tape ends.

The transmissions are between an unidentified female individual and an unidentified male individual, possibly JIM JONES.

Side B also contains radio transmissions between an unidentified female individual and an unidentified male individual, possibly JIM JONES. The tape contains references to the medical field, specifically obstetrics and geriatrics. At one point, the female individual asks the male individual whether or not it is okay to talk about preventative medical training and the male individual answers okay.

In addition, the male makes reference to getting all the notes from IRENE. The computerized code book reflects “IRENE” as a code name for “MARCELINE”.

The transmissions further go on to state that the community revolves around agriculture, all themes of the community are in commedy [commodity] form, and entertainment revolves around production.

This portion of the tape appears to contain information the male individual is furnishing to the female individual for inclusion into a report or documentary about the community.

The transmissions then concern affidavits, letters, the State Department, “CHRISTOPHER”, and “Mrs. SANTIAGO”.

The computerized code book reflects “CHRISTOPHER” as the code name for TIM S[TOEN] and “Mrs. SANTIAGO” as the code name for a division letter.
